  • Day 1: Summer Residences of Catherine II outside St Petersburg

    Stop At: Oranienbaum State Museum Reserve, Bldg. A Dvortsovyy pr-kt 48, Lomonosov, St. Petersburg 198412 Russia
    8:30-10 am ; Driving to Oranienbaum ( Lomonosov) city
    10-10:30 am to private summer residence of Catherine II- lovely Chinese Palace where she received foreign ambasadors because in those days Chinese style was extremely fashionable in Russia. The real gem of the palace is the Bugle-bead study, which is decorated with panels embroidered with bugle-beads and silk. This is a truly one of a kind treasure that survived almost three centuries and still impresses visitors of the palace.

    Catherine Palace with Amber Room ( actually named not after tsarina but the one she loved and cared about a lot ) and Agate Rooms where Catherine took baths, relaxed after, had her study and library ; this architectural masterpiece was opened for wide public recently ; its unique Russian Jasper(agate) from Siberia is as precious and extremely beautiful as amber from Amber Room

    A short stop on the St Isaac Square to take picture of St Isaac Cathedral and look at the house where French philosopher Diderot stayed during his short visit to St Petersburg (he was invited by Catherine the Great)

    A short stop near monument to Catherine II standing on the high pedestal, surrounded by her contemporaries (with 2 of her lovers among them!) she looks very impressive

    National Library is the palace where we keep (among many other precious books and manuscripts) a private Library of French philosopher Voltaire : both where in long correspondence with each other -learn details on the spot!

    Stop near Smolny Convent and nearby Smolny Institute - a former school for the girls from noble families founded by Catherine to bring up "a woman of new type " - listen to your guide's unusual stories about the girls and their school

    11-11:30 am The Church is an icon of St Petersburg and famous for its wonderful mosaics, it is also known as a place of assassination of great grandson of Catherine II, Emperor Alexander II

    11:30-12:30 pm Cathedral is the burial place of all the Romanovs( we plan to show you the most interesting graves ) including Catherine II ; here she rest in peace near her husband, Emperor Peter III - listen to your guide's story about their meeting, married life and Peter's disgraceful death ....

    2-4:30pm Catherine The Great started the collection of this great museum with purchasing of 225 paintings only ; now museum's collection exceeds 3 mln pieces of art ; besides, 3 out of 5 buildings of the main museum complex where created in her life time and by her order- The Small Hermitage , Old Hermitage and the Hermitage Theatre (you can enjoy a ballet there on the day 1)
