3-Day Hiking Tour of Theth, Valbona and Lake Koman Ferry from Tirana

The 3 Day Hiking Tour of Theth, Valbona and the Lake Koman Ferry combines the most beautiful places of the Albanian Alps. The tour starts and ends in Tirana. On the first day, you will travel to the remote mountain village of Theth and undertake a shorter hike to the magical Blue Eye of Theth pool. Moreover, you will explore the traditional lock-in tower and the church of Theth. Then on the second day, you will challenge yourself by undertaking a day-hike across the 1800 metres high Valbona Pass. And on the final day, you will take the Lake Koman Ferry, which was named: "one of the world's greatest boat trips" by Bradt Travel Guides.

Pick-up and drop-off in Tirana are included. You will stay 2 night in a traditional Guest House in the Theth village & the Valbone Village, which includes dinner and breakfast. You will travel with a 4 wheel-drive car and undertake 1 short hike and 1-day hike with a professional guide. You can see all the hidden gems in the Albanian Alps in only 3 days!

  • Day 1: Tirana - Theth - Blue Eye of Theth

    Stop At: Theth National Park, Rruga Nikgjonaj Rruga Nikgjonaj, Nr.18, Theth 4009 Albania
    Theth is a small mountain village located in the Theth National Park. The Theth valley is surrounded by the peaks of the Albanian Alps, which are also called the Accursed Mountains. The Theth National Park covers 2630 hectares and it is one of Albania's most remote areas. Theth can only be reached with a four-wheel drive car across a turning and twisting mountain road. The Theth National Park has natural touristic attractions, like the Blue Eye of Theth. And it is a popular destination for hikers.

    Stop At: Blue Eye of Theth, Kaprre Pusi i Zi, Syri i Kalter, Theth 4009 Albania
    The Blue Eye of Theth is a gorgeous, natural pool in the Theth National Park. From the Theth village, you can take the jeep to the Nderlysa village. From there, you must hike for about 1 hour to reach the Blue Eye of Theth. The Blue Eye pool has a magical blue color and is surrounded by beautiful nature. The pool is filled by a small waterfall. There is a wooden picnic plateau on the river, from where you have a stunning view. You can swim in the Blue Eye of Theth, but the water is ice cold, as it comes from the mountains.

    The Lock-in Tower is a historical monument in the Theth village. In the old times, the Albanian people followed the traditional law called the "Kanun of Leke Dukagjin". The Lock-in tower was a place where people who committed a crime according to the Kanun, where imprisoned. And it was also a place where families in conflict, could discuss their issues and come to a resolution. The Lock-in Tower is a beautiful touristic location, because it is surrounded by the high peaks of the Theth valley. The Theth Lock-in tower originally belonged to the Koceku family and one of the descendants is a guide in the tower today.

    Stop At: Theth, Albania
    The Church of Theth is a historical church in the Theth village, that was built in 1892. It is a very cute and quaint little church, which is surrounded by the peaks of the Theth valley. The inhabitants of Theth have been Roman Catholics throughout history. In 1917, the priest of the church opened a school and tough the local children to read and write in the Albanian language. Throughout the communist period, Albanians were forced to be atheists, therefore, the building was used as the village hospital. As a result, most of the locals over the age of 25 were born in the church. After the communist period, the church was renovated and it is in service today.

    Day 2: Theth - Valbona Pass - Valbona Valley

    Stop At: Valbona Pass, Rruga Azem Hajdari, Bajram Curri Albania
    We will start the day early and travel to the beginning of the trail in Theth. On this day, we will hike across the Valbone Pass, which is 1800 metres high. The route across the Valbone Pass is absolutely stunning. You will have impressive views of the Albanian Alps and its peaks and valleys. And there are beautiful waterfalls and rivers along the way. It will take us around 8 hours to hike from Theth to Valbone. You will be guided throughout the hiking trip. Please note, that you do not have to be an experienced hiker to undertake the hike across the Valbona Pass. However, you do need to be in an average physical shape. Because the trails are rough in some places.

    Moreover, the trail can be tiring in some places, because the trail leads upwards to the Valbone Pass (up to 1800 meters). Moreover, you have already hiked on the previous day in Theth, so you legs might feel a little tired already. Of course, we will make plenty of stops along the way to eat, refresh and take pictures.

    Day 3: Valbona - Koman Lake Ferry - Tirana

    Stop At: Komani Lake Ferry, Koman, Shkodër, Albania, Koman 4001, Albania
    The boat trip on Lake Koman is one of the most impressive touristic attractions in Albania. Bradt Guides even ranked it as "one of the world's greatest boat trips". Actually, the Lake Koman Ferry was meant to be transportation for the locals, but the journey on the lake is so beautiful that many tourists enjoy the boat trip for the experience.
    The boat trip on Lake Koman is an impressive journey, because the scenery surrounding the lake is spectacular. The water of the lake is a bright turquoise color and it is very clear. Moreover, the lake is surrounded by high mountain cliffs and it twists and turns through the mountain valley. Therefore, it is a very relaxing to simply sit on board and take in the views. The boat trip on Lake Koman lasts for about 3 hours, before it arrives in Koman. From Koman, we will drive to Tirana via Shkodra city.
