4-Day Congo Virunga Gorilla trekking & Nyiragongo Volcano Hike (Tchegera Island)

Nyiragongo Volcano is located in the east of Congo, around 19 km from Goma, and is the most active volcano in the world. In 1997 and 2002, flows of very liquid lava broke out from cracks in the volcanic slopes.

The night will be spent in tents on the rim of the giant crater, high above the active lava lake.

  • Day 1: Transfer to Goma, Congo

    Stop At: Goma, Goma, North Kivu Province
    You will arrive at the border crossing at 10:30 am and be checked in with the Virunga tourism office. You will receive your gorilla permit and the volcano trek permits after checking in, and you must present these permits on each of the activities for you to be allowed to participate.
    Duration: 4 hours

    Stop At: Virunga National Park, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
    You will then transfer to Kibumba Tented camp from where you will have a late lunch. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge in Virunga.

    Day 2: Gorilla trekking

    Stop At: Virunga National Park, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
    After an early breakfast at the lodge, head to the starting point of your gorilla trek where you will have ranger guides briefing you about the activity and what to expect. You will then embark on a thrilling gorilla trekking adventure where you will sight other animals in the parklike bush pigs, forest elephants, numerous birds, butterflies and also get to learn of the Virunga jungle from the knowledgeable guides and rangers. When you encounter the gorillas, maximize your on hour with them and after it has elapsed, get to trek back to the starting point. You will then transfer back to the lodge from where you will have a late lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure or enjoy a nature walk and bird watching experience in the Virunga. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.

    At Mikeno, you have the opportunity to visit and learn about the Senkwekwe Center, home to Virunga’s gorilla orphans, or choose to see a demonstration by the Congo Hounds, Virunga’s important anti-poaching unit. Other activities are serene forests walks or visits to the nearby coffee estate.

    Day 3: Mount Nyiragongo Hike

    Stop At: Mount Nyiragongo, 21 Gm, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
    After your breakfast at Kibumba tented camp, transfer to Kibati ranger post and arrive by 8:15 am and join a briefing by the rangers on the volcano hike ahead. You can hire porters from this point. Embark on the Nyiragongo volcano hike which can take about 6 hours. Gaze at the boiling lava lake to your satisfaction. Spend the night at the summit of the Nyiragongo.

    Day 4: Descend the Nyiragongo volcano & Transfer to Rwanda (or Tchegera Island if booked)

    Stop At: Mount Nyiragongo, 21 Gm, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
    Descend the Nyiragongo, depart: Early in the morning, leave the crater rim and start the descent the Nyiragongo back to Kibati in an average of 4 hours. Once at the bottom, be transferred back to Goma and dropped off at the border with Rwanda.

    Day 5: Tchegera Island (Bird Watching, Kayaking, Nature Walk), Transfer to Rwanda

    Stop At: Tchegera Island, Ile des Cochons, Democratic Republic of the Congo
    Tchegera Island is a beautiful island found in the northern shore of Lake Kivu which is shared by both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo .The Island is a U shaped collapsed volcanic caldera island only 20 minutes boat ride from the Goma port.

    Nature walks are another great way to explore Tchegera. On a nature walk, travellers get to see a range of wildlife in Tchegera like the blue monkeys, and also do bird watching to see a range of bird species that roam the island say the African eagle and gulls. Carrying binoculars and having comfortable shoes for long walks is recommended.

    Other activities in Tchegera that travellers can do are swimming and fishing which can be done on Lake Kivu, snorkelling, scenic and sunset viewing.
