Paul do Mar is one of the most important fishing centres of the archipelago. The ocean provides this parish with an incredibly rich variety of fish, to such an extent that it has become a reference in the world of gastronomy.
Until the late 1960s you could only access this fishing village by boat and for the next thirty years the only way to go down there was very slowly and carefully on a dangerous road. Fortunately the new road did not do any damage to the romantic aspect of the village and everywhere you go you can be sure to find peace, authenticity and tranquillity. Surrounded by the sea and cloaked by the mountains, this parish preserves the tranquillity of the old days, of which the old narrow streets and low-level houses with different shapes of chimneys still bear witness.
