Experience the thrill of ascending into the air by helicopter and soaring above the central North Island. On the scenic heli-flight you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the central plateau, the snow capped mountains of the Tongariro National Park and the ruggedly beautiful Whanganui National Park.

You’ll land on the lawn at Blue Duck Station, a 7,200 acre high country farm that is a working station, environmental conservation leader and a true outdoor playground of Aotearoa. Upon arrival morning tea will be served before a day of adventure begins.

Outside an All Terrain Vehicle awaits to take you down to the banks of the Whanganui River. Board the jet boat for a thrilling ride upriver, spinning and skimming over the water as you head deep into the gorge. As the river grows narrower and the moss lined banks close in, the boat slows to a stop. The tranquil sounds of the native birdsong is all that can be heard as your boat captain reveals a generous picnic basket, packed to the brim with a fresh, gourmet picnic-style lunch.

Heading back to the waiting ATV it’s time for a tour of the station. See the remains of unbelievable local history, hear about the conservation work taking place to preserve the station’s namesake, the Whio Blue Duck, and witness the everyday workings of this honey, sheep and beef station.

Deep in the heart of the station you’ll discover the Kaiwhakauka waterfall where a short track to the base will lead you to waiting kayaks. Hop in and paddle into the rocky canyon. When it opens out you’ll find yourself in a beautiful glade, a favourite spot of the rare Whio and your best chance for spotting one. The grand finale is the journey up to the ‘Top of the World’, the most remote restaurant in New Zealand, perched on top of a ridge with 360 degree views that will take your breath away. From here you can see the three peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Taranaki and endless miles of verdant native bush.

While the waiter pours you a glass of cold New Zealand wine, or hands you a beer, take a sip and soak up the magic, reflecting on the day. The chopper will arrive on the ridge to pick you up.

Depart Tauranga, New Plymouth, or Taumarunui helicopter port - for trips from Auckland please use Air NZ to New Plymouth (NP) or drive to Tauranga.
Same day from AKl is not possible, fly down to NP on the 6.45am service, you’ll be met at the airport by your pilot and taken for breakfast.
