Bucharest Private Wine Tasting Tour on Dealu Mare's Old Wine Road
Enjoy an epic day-trip from Bucharest and follow Romania’s old wine road, reopened to the public after several decades of "hibernation". Initially build by the Romans 2000 years ago, the road cuts straight through Dealu Mare's high hills, displaying beautifully restored manors with old cellars and endless vineyards.
Along the way, you’ll visit a wine museum located inside an old Wallachian manor and enjoy 2 wine tasting sessions at two prestigious wineries. The quality of the wines combined with the knowledge of the local producers will help you understand why Romania is reclaiming its position as a top wine country, currently being the world's 13th producer. Pass By: University Palace, Universitatii Square Bucharest University, Bucharest Romania
Your private guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Bucharest. While driving towards our first stop, the guide will brief you about what to expect during the day: 1 wine museum and 2 wine tastings at local wineries situated on the hills of Dealu Mare wine region.
Romania, a country with a long standing tradition in wine-making, is the world’s 13th wine producer, despite losing half of its farmable lands after the 1989 revolution and despite suffering a loss of prestige several decades ago, when communists favored mass production over quality. Nowadays, the country has gone through a process of mass restoration, aiming to retake its rightful place among the Top 10 wine producing countries.
Stop At: Bellu Manor, Str. Orzoaia de Sus nr.2, Urlati 106300 Romania
We'll head towards Dealu Mare – Romania’s most famous wine region. After a 1 hour and a half drive, we'll enter the old Wine Road and stop at the beautifully restored Bellu Manor – a marvel of traditional Wallachian architecture. Built by Baron Alexandru Bellu in the 19th century, the manor is not just a great art collection, but also an important wine museum. With a great passion for wine and even owning a sparkling wine factory, the baron stored precious tools in the manor’s great cellar: the oldest wine press in Wallachia, enormous barrels and extremely old wine making tools going back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: LacertA Winery, Fintesti 434, Buzau Romania
Our 2nd major stop of the day is at Lacerta Winery. Yes, it’s around noon so it’s time to start drinking some good wines! Same as Bordeaux or Toscana wineries, Lacerta’s wine estate stretches along the 45th parallel and thus has the ideal climate for producing wines with a rich, complex and silken taste. Lacerta is one of the most modern wineries in Romania, with production techniques based on gravitational principles meant to limit the usage of pumps. You'll take a guided tour of the winery, taste 6 high quality Romanian wines along with a plate of cheese & dry sausages, all in a fairy tale location. Surrounded by the endless vineyards covering the hills of Dealu Mare, this is one of the most beautiful wineries in the country.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Casa Colinelor, Strada Valea Bobului 20, Urlați 106300, Romania
The fourth stop of the day is at Casa Colinelor - a boutique winery and also a family owned business. In other words, it's the best place to experience the local wine culture in a cozy, fully private way. After lunch, we can chill out on the terrace to admire the beautiful vineyards surrounding the house, visit the cellars and taste 6 types of Romanian wines along with a plate of local cheese. Late afternoon, after enjoying quality wines and having spent a peaceful, relaxing day in the country side, it’s time to say goodbye to Dealu Mare’s hills and head back to Bucharest. In vino veritas!
