Central Kazakhstan Steppes

During this tour you will visit the Karkaraly National Park that rises up suddenly from the unrelenting flatness. Its landscapes are original and diverse: steppes alternate with amazing mountains, forests and lakes. Next to Karkaraly is located Beldeutac Natural Reserve, where you will find rare species of animals such as argali, golden eagle, saker falcon, black stork, eagle owl, and Pallas’s cat. All of them are in the Red Book of Kazakhstan.
Further away from the main park lie ancient ruins that attest to the unexpected history of this site. In the middle of the Kent Mountains is a unique, historical, and cultural monument from the Bronze Age, the ancient settlement of Kent city which was once home to one thousand people.
You will overnight in small villages where you will have a chance to see how locals live, try traditional food and drinks, listen to life performance of kakzakh national insrument Dombyra and feel yourself a nomad!

    Welcome to Kazakhstan capital! A complimentary arrival transfer is included with your trip. Please ensure you provide your flight details at least 14 days prior to travel so the transfer can be organised.

    There will be a welcome meeting at approximately 6pm this evening. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so ensure you have all these details to provide to your tour guide. The tour briefing is generally followed by an optional group dinner.

    As there's a great deal to do in Astana, we recommend staying a few extra days before or after the trip to make the most of this modern city. If you need help booking extra accommodation, our reservations team will be happy to assist.

    Day 2: Karkaralinsk

    Stop At: Karkaraly, Karkaraly, Karagandy Province
    Today head from Astana towards Karkaralinsk. This is a small village located close to Karkaraly Natioanl Park. In total it's about 4.5 hours drive (400 km). Along our journey we make a stop for a dinner.

    In the afternoon walk in the Karkaraly mountains with climbing to the top of City ( 1343 meters above sea level) with a wonderful view of the entire mountain and forest oasis, including its highest point - the peak Karkaraly. Total climb around 250 meters. Finish your day with a visit to Lake Shaitankol where you have fantastc boat trip, which gives you an unforgettable view of the sunset -the perfect way to relax after a long day.

    Day 3: Karkaralinsk-Shabanbay Bi Village

    Stop At: Karkaraly, Karkaraly, Karagandy Province
    After breakfast prepapre yourself for a day full of excursions to national park, ancient city of Kent, Buddhist Temple and place where you can learn and try kazakh traditional drink.

    Today visit Beldeutas national park on the east of Karkaraly -home to many protected species including Pallas’s cat and argali (arkhar). Arrive in Kent, ancient city belonging to the Bronze Age The ruins of Kent city, located in the Kent mountains, dated XIV century. Explore the atmospheric ruins of Kent palace- small, square-shaped consctruction with almost all sides surrounded by rocky mountains. The secluded nature of the terrain, building plan and salable, according to some scientists, allow to look at Kent palace, as a Buddhist temple and an architectural monument of the time of Jungar invasion in the Kazakh steppes. Aftewards head to Shabanbay bi village. Along the way, stop in kumiskhana, the place where kumis, kazakh traraditional drink is made from mare's milk. Learn the history and importance of this wonderful drink, see how it is traditionally made and of course let yourself to enjoy its unusual taste.

    Day 4: Shabanbay Bi Village

    Stop At: Karkaraly, Karkaraly, Karagandy Province
    Today explore the incredible sights of Kyzylaray oasis. Shabanbay Bi is a tiny village located on the border of the Kyzylaray Nature Reserve. Here you find the highest point of Central Kazakhstan, Axoran Peak at a height of 1565 m. The Kyzylaray oasis is an amazing combination of forest, steppe and mountains with unique flora and fauna. Wild animals such as argali (arkhar), moose, boars, lynxes can be found here. On top of that discover an archaeological monument of the Bronze Age, the memorial of Begazy with its unique granite tombs. Other sights include the Stone Age rock inscriptions on Mount Zheltau, sacred Mount Aulie with a cave and spring, Balbaltas- ancient stone pillars in the form of human figures. After enjoying the scenery, come back to the villlage and have a lunch.

    Spend a free afternoon at your leisure. You might like to rent a bicycle or ride a horse or just walk around the village and see how the local people live. In the eveining savour the traditional taste of Kazkakh dishes listening to nomadic sounds of Dombyra, kazkakh national music instrument.

    After breakfast start driving to Astana via Karaganda. It is about 3.5 hours drive (290 km) to Karaganda and after 1.5 hours (200 km) to Astana. Stop over in Karaganda for lunch and short city tour.

    During your stay in Karaganda, if you like you might visit Karlag, oneof the Soviet forced labor camps of the GULAG (i.e. Central administrative board of camps) organized by Josef Stalin in the period of mass political repressions.
