Hikone Castle (彦根城, Hikonejō) was completed in 1622. The hilltop castle served as the seat of the Ii daimyo (feudal lords) until the end of the feudal age in 1868. Hikone Castle is an original castle, i.e. it survived the post feudal era without undergoing destruction and reconstruction.

Genkyuen Garden is a Japanese landscape garden with a central pond and a circular walking trail. It was built on the grounds of Hikone Castle in 1677 by the local lord for the entertainment of his guests and his family. It is designed after a palace garden from Tang China.

Omi Hachiman (近江八幡, Ōmihachiman) is a city in Shiga Prefecture that is known for its nicely preserved old town and canal where visitors can enjoy traditional boat cruises through the historic townscape.

The Hachiman-bori Canal was a mainstay in regional economics and transportation until the start of the Showa period (1926 - 1989). In recent years it has become a famous spot for sightseeing, with such features as the harbor being renovated. It is also a spot often used for filming TV shows and movies, and was recently featured in the live action adaptation of the popular anime "Rurouni Kenshin."

A veritable forest of trees grows on the vast, 44,000 square meter shrine grounds. Passing through them and then the tower gate will bring you to the shrine buildings themselves. Furthermore, the "Sagicho Matsuri" bonfire festival and "Hachiman Matsuri" festival held here are both designated Intangible Folk Culture Properties.

The old townscape is especially well preserved in the vicinity of the Shinmachi area, and is a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The cityscape was erected from the end of the Edo period (1603 - 1868) through the Meiji period (1868-1912), and is a popular spot as the home of the Omi merchants. You can also find manholes with Omi-Hachiman cityscape designs.
