    Start your day with an outdoor buffet breakfast, with Italian and American delicacies such as pastries, meats, cheese, eggs and fresh pancakes. Sip coffee and fresh orange juice in the tranquil setting of the Vatican, before the crowds arrive. After breakfast, your guide will escort you through the Vatican Museums complex while it is still closed to the public (a few other pre-booked tour groups will be the only others inside).

    The Vatican is home to some of the greatest and most impressive works of art in the world, and this tour ensures that you will see the very best on offer. You’ll meet your guide outside the Vatican Museums, before benefitting from fast-track access to avoid the queues. Any belongings you have with you can be left in the cloakroom if desired and there will be chance for a comfort break before the start of the tour.

    First up will be the vast collection of ancient Roman and Greek sculptures, gathered from excavations across Rome. When the popes ruled Central Italy, the Vatican had the rights to all archaeological finds. Your guide will take you to see the most impressive of these, including the Belvedere Apollo, the Torso, the busts of Claudius and Hadrian and the sarcophagi of Helen and Constance, the mother and daughter of Emperor Constantine.

    You will then head into the Room of Animals and through the Gallery of Candelabra which contains ancient Roman mosaics and also the beautiful statues of Diana of Ephesus, the Muses and a multitude of Greek philosophers.

    Stop At: Stanze di Raffaello, Viale Vaticano, Vatican City Italy

    The tour will continue through the Gallery of Tapestries, the Sobieski Hall and into Raphael’s Rooms. The latter were once the private apartments of Pope Julius II; decorated by Raphael, and are some of the most beautiful rooms in the Vatican. These rooms include two of the Raphael's most renowned works: the Parnassus and The School of Athens.

    Any tour of the Vatican must include the Sistine Chapel, and this is no exception! Italy’s most popular attraction, about the chapel contains Michelangelo’s incredible frescoes - The Last Judgment, the Creation of Adam and the Genesis - as well as works depicting the Stories of Moses and Jesus painted by Botticelli, Perugino and other Renaissance masters. The chapel is still used today for Conclave - the papal election. Your guide will share with you anecdotes and little-known secrets about this sacred place.

    After the Sistine Chapel, you will visit the world’s most renowned Catholic Church - Saint Peter’s Basilica - where another of Michelangelo’s masterpieces is displayed - La Pietà. You’ll hear all about the architecture and the history of the Basilica, and also visit the tombs of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II.

    The tour ends in Saint Peter’s Square, and from here you can admire Bernini’s statues, as well as spot the famous chimney which announces the election of a new pope. After a few final anecdotes your guide it will be time to say goodbye and you can explore at your own pace. A great way to end a tour of the Vatican!
