HISSAR FORTRESS (3000 years old) — located 26 km from Dushanbe (West). The fortress is an open-air Museum. A number of legends from the work of A. Firdousi "Shahname"are connected with the Hissar fortress.
Hissar is the capital of the province of Eastern Bukhara and was in the hands of the Governor of Emir Ibrahim Bey until 1924, when he was defeated by the red army. The fortress overlooks the market square, surrounded by a caravanserai and two madrasas, one of which is an ethnographic Museum. Other unique historical finds near the Hissar fortress are the Mausoleum of mahdumi Azam, Masjidi-I-Sangin ("Stone mosque"), and the natural source of Chashmai Mohien

11:00 – visit Hisar Fortress and its museum. Hisar Fortress used to be a palace of one of Bukhara Emirate becks. The fortress with 1 m walls and loopholes for guns and cannons towered on a high hill's slope and was carefully guarded. Inside there was a pool and a garden. Across from the fortress there was a noisy market square with a caravanserai and a variety of shops. Hissar Fortress and the town had been settled from VI BC to mid of XIX. It was the main administrative, political and economical centre of Hissar valley.

Today Tursunzoda has been elevated to the level of a national hero of Tajikistan. Tursunzoda's face appears on the front of the one Somoni note.
