The Pigeon Hole or ‘Poll na gColum’, is a cave located just outside of Cong. It is one of the most renowned and easily accessible caves in the area. A flight of 61 limestone steps leads down to the mysterious mouth of the cave, opening up a large chasm to those who dare with a stream connecting the nearby Loughs. In the winter time, the eerie sound of the water rapidly flowing through the cave may be mistaken for the wail of a Banshee. One of Cong’s most famous Fairy Tales is associated with the Pigeon Hole, ”The Fairy Trout” but we’ll leave the telling of that ”Tale” to our local guide.
