The lake is located on the border of the Kotayk and Gegharkunik regions, in the crater of the Lchin volcano, on the Geghama plateau, 6 km from the Azhdahak mountain, at an altitude of 3030 meters above sea level. The area of the mirror is 0.5 km², the volume is 2500 thousand m³, the greatest depth is 15 m.
The lake has exclusively rainwater, in winter it is covered with ice. Directly near the lake there are alpine meadows. Return to Yerevan
Nature of the Gegama mountain range: The Geghama mountain chain is located to the west of Lake Sevan. The highest peaks are Big Ajdahak (3598m), Spitakasar (3555m), Geghasar (3443m), Aknasar (3258m) and Sevkatar (3225m).
From the western slopes of the Gegama Mountains, the rivers Azat, Vedi, Getar, and from the eastern ones - Gavaraget, Argichi, Bakhtak, etc., begin to flow. Among the lakes there are Akna, Lake Vanki, Vishapalich, and also a lake formed in the crater of Greater Azhdahak. The climate here is moderately continental, with a short cool summer and a long cold winter. At the very top, near the peaks, there is always a cold mountain climate. The average annual temperature in the foothills is 4-6 ° C, in the mountains 0-2 °, and at the peaks -2 °. The annual rainfall is from 500 to 900 mm, the thickness of the snow cover is from 30 to 100 cm.
Vishapakars (dragon stones), which in ancient Armenian mythology symbolized giant cancer, were preserved at Lake Vanka. In the vicinity there were different rock paintings, the oldest of which date back to the 7th millennium BC.
