Lonely Planet Experience: Turkish Traditions Tea & Coffee Tastings

This tour mainly covers the traditional and modern way of tea and coffee drinking habits, the change and the evolution of this on Turkish culture, different brewing methods for tea & coffee and 4 different tastings. The guests also have a chance to do a little shopping in the Spice Market which is the main center for hundreds of different tea leaves, spices, coffee beans and delights.

Most of the route is designed around the local, artsy and colorful streets such as Cukurcuma, Tomtom and Galata. The guests are free to take a look at the shops on our route, maybe do a little shopping, take some photos.

    Although tea passed through Turkey as part of the Silk Road trade in the 1500s, it did not begin to become a part of daily life until nearly four centuries later. In 1878 Mehmet Izzet, the then governor of Adana, published the Çay Risalesi (Tea Pamphlet), touting the health benefits of drinking tea.

    Cukurcuma is home to beautiful furniture and antiques in Istanbul. The old houses in Cukurcuma have been restored and now serve as antique shops.

    The Tomtom neighborhood used to be busy with the city's Levantine society, beginning from the late 18th century. The Tomtom Kaptan Street in the namesake neighborhood takes its name from the mosque situated at the entrance on the Çukurcuma side built in 1592.

    You will discover a narrow street, nearby, which was once famous with Doğan Apartmanı, the big yellow complex with a beautiful courtyard where a lot of famous Istanbulites reside.
