In the morning, after breakfast, head to the meeting point in downtown Malaga, right next to the Unicaja Bank building, where you’ll meet your guide and start your tour. First head to the Conde de Guadalhorce Dam, the main water reserve of the province of Malaga. There, your guide will tell you all about the history of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, a breath-taking canyon formed by the Guadalhorce river. The northern access to the canyon takes you through the Guadalhorce reservoirs, whereas the southern access is via the charming town of El Chorro. The construction of a water channel that went from the reservoirs in the north all the way down to the southern El Chorro was carried out in parallel to the creation of a parallel pathway for the channel’s maintenance. This thrilling path is known as El Caminito del Rey (‘The King’s Little Pathway’) because it was first inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII. It is about 3 kilometres long, just under a metre wide and it clings to the walls of the canyon about 100 metres above the Guadalhorce river. It has recently been renovated, and its walkways and footbridges that cross the river now look better than ever. After two and a half hours of hiking, return to Malaga and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
