Nature & Bike along Sile river up to the Venice lagoon

Follow the Sile river by bike from Treviso to the Venice lagoon through naturalistic oases, lush cultivated fields and the “burci”, evidence of the ancient trade of Venice with its hinterland.
The bike path along the Sile river winds along secondary roads, away from traffic and in close contact with nature, starting from the historic center of Treviso and proceeding along the alzaie ("towpaths"), used centuries ago to towing boats upstream by land.
We will continue to the island of Villapendola, the Green Lake and the Burci cemetery, ancient boats from the Venetian era.
Following the easy paths along the river, we will reach Portegrandi, the entry point into the lagoon and the original mouth of the Sile before the Venetians diverted its course to the east.
We will continue admiring unexpected views of the lagoon and the islands of Torcello and Mazzorbo, decing whether to return to Venice or continue along the river Piave Vecchia returning by train from San Dona di Piave.

Stop At: Ferrovia, 30121 Venice, Metropolitan City of Venice, Italy

We will meet at Venezia Mestre railway station or in another meeting point to be agreed before hand

    Duration: 5 minutes

Stop At: Treviso, Treviso, Province of Treviso, Veneto

Treviso is located in the Venetian plain in a privileged position, which over the centuries has proved to be strategic both from a military and a commercial point of view: the ancient Roman Tarvisium was in fact a very prosperous city in the Middle Ages: nd we will understand this by pedaling near the imposing Palazzo dei Trecento, dating back to 1185. The city became even more prosperous starting from 1389, the year in which the Treviso inhabitants, after alternating vicissitudes of subjection, spontaneously conceded to Venice, which ensured them a long and prosperous peace. Of this long alliance, which lasted until 1797, there are evident historical and artistic traces, so much so that Treviso is often defined as the little Venice of the mainland.

    Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Parco Naturale Regionale del Fiume Sile, Via Tandura 40, 31100, Treviso Italy

The 4152 hectare (16 sq miles) River Sile Regional Natural Park lies within 11 municipalities in the provinces of Padua, Treviso and Venice.
The springs are situated between Casacorba di Vedelago (Treviso) and Torreselle di Piombino Dese (Padua), source of Italy's longest resurgence river, about 70 km from Casacorba di Vedelago (Treviso) to Portegrandi di Quarto d'Altino (Venice), the natural mouth of the river in the Venice Lagoon before the "Taglio del Sile" canal was opened.
Since the earliest times, its mild climate, navigable waters, proximity to the sea, copious outflow from the springs and abundant woods in the surrounding countryside (although similar, the landscape was different from that of today) attracted populations to the Sile where they settled along its banks.

    Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Conca di Portegrandi, Portegrandi, Quarto D'Altino Italy

The mouth of the river Sile into the lagoon was diverted here in 1683 by the Serenissima Republic with the "cut" of the Sile towards Caposile on the bed of the Piave, in turn diverted further north. The two rivers now flow directly into the Adriatic without creating problems in the lagoon.

Traveling along the main road on the embankment towards Caposile, as Jesolani tourists do quickly and casually, or descending the Sile along the cycle path from Treviso with meditative calm, it is the thrill of looking out onto the lagoon, mysterious, indecipherable from the mainland.

In the distance Torcello, unreally suspended over the water almost a mirage, the lagoon island where the inhabitants of Altino and Aquileia took refuge, pursued by the invading 'barbarians'. The germ from which the millenary civilization of the Serenissima Venetian Republic was born.
