    Doune Castle is a medieval stronghold near the village of Doune, in the Stirling district of central Scotland. The formidable Doune Castle was built for the Regent Albany. The striking keep-gatehouse combines domestic quarters including the splendid Lord’s Hall with its carved oak screen, musicians’ gallery and double fireplace.

The centuries-old streets are used regularly in the filming of Outlander, most recognisably as Inverness in the 1940s and 1960s.

    One of Scotland’s most impressive strongholds, Blackness Castle was built in the 15th century by one of Scotland’s most powerful families, the Crichtons. In Mary Queen of Scots (2018), starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, Blackness Castle featured as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the place where she married Lord Darnley and where her secretary and good friend David Rizzio was murdered.

    Hopetoun House, Scotland’s finest stately home, is an important part of European architectural heritage situated in South Queensferry, outside Edinburgh. Home of the Marquess of Linlithgow, Hopetoun is one of the most splendid examples of the work of Scottish architects Sir William Bruce and William Adam.

    Used as the monastery at end of Season 1
    Built by the Douglas family, it is a large and imposing suite of buildings from the 12th to the 17th century with the grand hall-house, thought to be the oldest standing stone castle in Scotland. There is also a delightful walled garden, with scented flowers and a beehive-shaped doocot, which overlooks the Forth.
