Stop At: Cotopaxi National Park, Ecuador

We will explore the Cotopaxi area, in the morning we will head to Hacienda El Porvenir, where we will be welcomed with a hot canelazo and cheese empanadas. After our welcome drink, our guides will give us a brief riding lesson before we venture out on our horses. Wearing the typical dress of the chagra (Ecuadorian cowboys), we start a ride of 2 hours through exclusive trails inside the hacienda. The first portion of the ride we will get acquainted with our horses and ride on dirt roads. We will pass by the Tentadero, a bull ring where we test our bravo cattle. Then we will ride through open paramo where we can learn about the native flora and fauna of the area. We will reach the 3,800 mts. (12,500 ft) at “El Mirador de los Guardianes del Volcán” where we will enjoy a magnificent view of the Cotopaxi Volcano, then we will start our descent towards the hacienda. The pace of the horses in mainly walking, but we have the opportunity to trot and canter on portions of the ride. Good possibilities of spotting Andean birds on this ride. Return to the hacienda to get our packed lunch and then we will drive to the famous Cotopaxi National Park, we will cross the páramo plains where we will eventually reach the car park (4,500m.) below the climbing hut. From here, we begin to hike up to the hut (or “refugio” in Spanish) José Ribas at 4,800m. (15,744 ft), and come face-to-face with the imposing, snow-clad Cotopaxi volcano. After descending from the Refugio, we will continue on to Limpiopungo Lake and be served a delicious packed lunch.
