Stop At: Temple of Poseidon, Cape Sounio, Sounio 195 00 Greece

At Cape Sounion, 70km south of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon stands on a steep cliff that plunges 65m to the sea. Built in 444 BC – same year as the Parthenon – of marble from nearby Agrilesa, it is a vision of gleaming white columns. Sailors in ancient times knew they were nearly home when they saw the first glimpse of white; views from the temple are equally impressive.

    Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Archaeological Site of Thorikos, Thoriko, Thoricus 190 01 Greece

The ruins of the ancient town of Thorikos are located on the east coast of Attica, around 10km (6 mi) north of Cape Sounion. Being one of the oldest deme of Attica, Thorikos is traditionally considered as being one of the 12 settlements which took part in the political unification, under Athenian hegemony, by Theseus. By virtue of its proximity to the all-important silver mines of Lavrion, Thorikos was the regional mining centre and was fortified (Xen. Hell. 1.2.1) so as to protect both the sea route to Athens and the silver mines at Lavrion, which were instrumental in Athens’ rise to maritime and geopolitical supremacy. This is the 1st industrial city of the ancient world.

    Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Vravrona, Vravrona, East Attica Region, Attica

The Sanctuary of Artemis and Museum. This partially restored temple to the goddess of the hunt dates from approximately 420 BC, with some earlier remains. Most remarkable is an ancient stone bridge over the river (now rerouted), cut through with wagon-wheel tracks. Entrance is via a very good museum, which shows remarkable votive gems and statues of children (Artemis was their protector). During the excavations a number of children's toys were unearthed and you can see them in the museum.

    Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Vravrona, Vravrona, East Attica Region, Attica

We conclude our journey by visiting a winery to taste the local varieties and explore their premises.
