Riddles and Mysteries of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

We will try to solve the riddles of number one attraction of Ukraine - KYIV-PECHERSK LAVRA, the second oldest Christian stronghold of Ukraine. We will try to penetrate the history of LAVRA CATACOMBS, which hold the imperishable relics of 122 monks. You will be introduced to the stunning results of medical experiments on these human remains. You will also learn what miraculous events happened here throughout centuries.

In addition, we will visit 3 churches - ASSUMPTION CATHEDRAL, GATE CHURCH OF THE TRINITY & REFECTORY CHURCH and learn how to decipher the symbolism of their wall images.I will teach you how to read Ukrainian Orthodox architecture and to interpret it through the prism of color science.

    Number one attraction of Ukraine - KYIVO-PECHERS'KA LAVRA (aka Kyiv Monastery of the Caves) - is the second oldest surviving Christian stronghold of Ukraine. Entry ticket UAH120 or EUR 3.5.

    Founded in the middle of the 11th century, it is rightly considered the cradle of Ukrainian Christianity and as such is often compared to the Roman Vatican.

    Lavra's 10 to 15 meter deep catacombs hold the imperishable relics of some 122 monks and saintly persons, which have been preserved naturally to this very day.

    Lavra boasts one of Kyiv's best observation decks, which offers a mind-boggling view of the Monastery architectural ensemble of some 20+ golden-domed churches and left-bank Kyiv.

    The Gate Church of the Trinity tops the main entrance to Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Built in 1008 AD and having survived the Mongol invasion in 1240 AD, it's the oldest standing church in the Monastery. Also, it's the only church in Europe to retain its 18th-century Baroque interior decorations and paintings intact.

    The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos is the main cathedral church of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. It served as a "God-made" prototype of all monastic temples of Rus" and a burial vault of Kyiv princes. Was built in 1078 AD, destroyed during WWII and rebuilt from scratch in 2000.

    Located in the grounds of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves), the Mykola Syadrysty Microminiatures Museum features a mind-blowing collection of microminiatures by artisan Mykola Syadristy. The items on display range in size from a few millimeters to just a fraction of a millimeter. Of particular interest is a dried-up flea shod with golden shoes.
